Mt. Evans Hill Climb

This is a short ride (only 27.5 miles one way), but it's all climb - 6,700' worth - from a starting elevation of 7,600' in Idaho Springs, CO all the way to a finishing elevation of 14,100' at the Mt. Evans summit. The 11 switchbacks in the last 5 miles are amazing. The average grade is not high at 4.5% including a couple short flat & downhill sections. The problem is there's just not much oxygen up there!

It did give me a good understanding of just how strong a world class pro is though. Tom Danielson (who wasn't selected for the Garmin-Slipstream TdF team) did this climb on the same day in 1:42:09. If my arithmetic is right, that's averaging approximately 16 mph all the way to the rafters of Colorado!
