Ascent file format

Postby mickjordan on Sun Apr 26, 2015 9:38 pm

I had a lot of activities from early 2008 until the Mac OS X Mavericks update came along. When I open my 95MB Ascent01 file now it only shows a handful of activities from early 2008. I did the experiment of installing Snow Leopard in a VirtualBox VM and opening the file there, but no difference. I'm guessing that when I ran Ascent the first time under Mavericks it corrupted the file when I exited. I've tried to locate an earlier version of the file with Time Machine but, perhaps related to having restored my Mac complete from a Time Machine backup in 2014, I can't find any version of the file older than that.

I'm pretty sure that all the data is in there, given the size of the file, the question is how to get at it. I wonder if anyone knows the file format used by Ascent?

I would expect that it's corrupted.
I can see mine fine on Mavericks and Yosemite ok without issue.

However, I have lost almost all of my 2011 bike rides. The file sizes are big enough, but they are corrupted. Even the backups are corrupted.
I emailed Rob at Montebello Software, he owns Ascent and is very helpful. I sent him a zipped 2011 file but sadly it was too far gone.

Hopefully your files can be recovered.
Drop him an email and ask what you can do, maybe he can sort it for you.

Fingers crossed,
