Last OSX version that works with Ascent?

Postby Mick F on Thu Feb 20, 2014 7:35 am

We use OSX 10.6 and are the top end of that at 10.6.8 and are happy with it.

If we were to upgrade, what is the latest version of OSX that Ascent will work with?

How high can we go?
I know that Ascent isn't being developed any more, so there must be a last OSX version that works with Ascent?

Regards,
Mick.

Mick - Others have reported that Ascent works with OSX Mavericks (OSX 10.9). I just opened Ascent for the first time since updating to OSX 10.9.1. I had to reenter all of my registration information including registration code, but it seems to work and all of my data looks to be present. Due to the horrendous winter we have been having I have not ridden since early January so I hadn't had the opportunity to try downloading any rides yet. I would still advise that you find an alternative program.

BTW, OSX 10.9.1 is the most recent version of the Mac OS.

Thanks for getting back to me.
We've had a rotten winter too, but not cold at all - just endless rains and flooding combined with Force 10 gales.

Mavericks eh?
From what I read, you need a Mac post early 2009, but my MacBook is a 2007 version. My wife has a later one - 2009 I think, and we have a 2009 iMac ..... so we could go to Mavericks with those.

This MacBook is showing it's age. I'm on the second battery and the second HD with it, and some of the plastic bits around the edges of the body are cracking. Also, I feel that one or both of the USB ports are a bit suspect.

It's good to know that if we do upgrade - and I buy a nice new machine - I can still use Ascent.
BTW, we still have a 2002 iBook in working order - OSX 10.2 and Classic OS 9.

Yes, I know that I should find another product for my bike rides, but Ascent works so well and does all that I need. I was using a Garmin 705 with HR and speed/cadence up until recently, and have records going back to 2004, but recently I tired of it all and sold it. I now use a Garmin Montana without HR, and just use it for ride logging and navigation. Ascent is fine, and does enough for me and my Montana.

Thanks for the re-assuring info.
Regards,
Mick.

I read today that Mavericks doesn't work with Garmin Basecamp.

Garmin are discovering "non trivial" surprises.

Has anyone tried to run Ascent under Yosemite DP?

Re: Last OSX version that works with Ascent? Yosemite 10.10

Postby MtnBiker on Mon Oct 20, 2014 5:17 pm

Works with Yosemite 10.10 (publicly released version).

Imported gpx file, double clicking on map and elevation profile brought up larger version. Changed maps. Changed path presentation (speed, pace, etc.). All worked.

Two plus years out of date and still works. A credit to Rob and Apple.

Mr. Rob Boyer please let this continue to be developed—sell or open-source or whatever.

Ascent seemed to work mostly fine for me today, under Yosemite 10.10, except for one thing. When attempting to add a manual activity, with another activity selected, I couldn't change the time (which appears as a clock image in the add activity dialog). So there were two activities at the same time, and Ascent rejected the new activity.

I do this because I ride my bike to the gym, and then I add the gym session manually, with the ride activity selected.

My workaround was to add the activity while no other activity was selected, so Ascent proposes "now" as the time of the activity. I then changed the date, but left the time of day unchanged.

welp...
I upgraded to el capitan, and it was working before, but seems to be no longer able to GPS sync on
10.11.1 (15B42)

I've emailed support (a long, long shot). To see if there are any known limitations or reasons.

I tried reinstalling, no such luck. Might finally be time to migrate off ascent, that's served me well since 07, on to something different.
However I'm not a fan so far of RubiTrack

For what it's worth, I reinstalled Garmin communicator, and can now leverage the expieremental sync, which will do for now. I've found I don't really like Rubitrax 4.
